How often should an office be cleaned? A practical UK schedule
Updated 6 November 2026 · By the Commercial Office Cleaners team
Short answer: Most UK offices with staff in every day need kitchens, washrooms and bins cleaned daily or at least three times a week, with desks, floors and touch points cleaned on each visit. Deeper tasks such as carpet extraction, high-level dusting and appliance cleaning are usually done monthly or quarterly. Small or part-time offices can often manage with one or two visits a week.
A typical cleaning schedule
| Task | Typical frequency |
|---|---|
| Empty bins and recycling | Every visit |
| Clean and disinfect washrooms | Every visit |
| Clean kitchen surfaces, sinks and washing up | Every visit |
| Wipe desks and touch points | Every visit |
| Vacuum carpets and mop hard floors | Every visit |
| Clean internal glass and partitions | Weekly |
| Clean inside fridges and microwaves | Weekly |
| High-level dusting and skirting boards | Monthly |
| Carpet extraction cleaning | Every 6 to 12 months |
How to choose the right frequency
- Headcount, as more people means more waste and washroom use
- Whether staff eat at their desks or in a shared kitchen
- Visitor numbers, since reception and meeting rooms need to look right
- Hybrid working patterns, which may mean busy days need more cleaning than quiet ones
- Budget, balancing more frequent short visits against fewer longer ones
Your legal duty
The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 require workplaces, furniture and fittings to be kept sufficiently clean, and waste not to be allowed to build up except in suitable containers. The regulations do not set a fixed frequency, so the schedule should reflect how the office is used.
